About This Comparison

This comparison tool allows you to analyze incident patterns between traditional bicycles and e-bikes over the same time period. The data is sourced from the NYPD Motor Vehicle Collisions Dataset provided by the City of New York.

Methodology: This analysis focuses exclusively on vehicle type codes to categorize incidents. We identify e-bikes and e-scooters by looking for terms like "e-bike", "electric bike", "e-scooter", "scooter" in the vehicle type fields. Traditional bicycles are identified by terms like "bicycle" or "bike" without any electric-related terms.

Example: An incident where vehicle_type_code2 is "E-Bike" would be categorized as an e-bike incident, even if no cyclist injuries or fatalities were recorded. This approach ensures we capture all incidents involving these vehicle types.

Data limitations: The NYPD dataset may not consistently distinguish between traditional bicycles and e-bikes, especially in older records. The comparison shown here represents our best effort to categorize the available data based solely on the vehicle type information provided.
